It's All About Being Kind!
We have been talking about kindness-what does it mean to be kind? How can we show kindness to each other in our classroom and how can we spread kindness throughout the school and in our community?
As a class, we decided to challenge ourselves to see how many acts of kindness we could do each day. We filled out Kindness Challenge Charts and put them up on the bulletin board in the hallway. We also decided we would challenge the rest of the students at Hawkwood School by putting up acts of kindness for them to do too! We also made Kindness Posters to remind students to be kind to one another. Over the next week or two, we will be making announcements to see if they are up for the challenge!
We are practicing using kind words with each other in the classroom, as well as outside of our classroom. Students are starting to recognize how being kind to others makes them feel. We are also keeping Kindness Journals so we start noticing the kindness all around us!

We needed to get to know each other so we played a lot of ice breaker type games and shared some things about ourselves.
Then, we did a couple of art projects and some writing about ourselves.
We started with creating a piece of name art, using different types of lines and a variety of colors.
Each piece was unique and showed how different we all are. We talked about how our differences are what makes us special and how they can bring us together to create a new classroom community.
Next, we did mono-chromatic self portraits. First, we used a mirror to take a close look at our faces, looking particularly closely at the shapes. We sketched them with pencil and chose one color. We used a variety of shades of the same color, using both pencil crayons and marker. We also added some detail in the background of our portraits. Again, the portraits showed our personal style and our view of ourselves.

We read the book, the 'Best Part of Me' by Wendy Ewald. We talked about how sometimes we have difficulty talking about the positive things about ourselves and how we need to be proud of who we are. The students had to choose the part of themselves and why they thought that was the best part.
